Three panels showing different insect parts and materials. The first panel has black, shiny, irregularly shaped bug parts. The second panel has a close-up of a pale, segmented insect leg with fine hairs. The third panel shows small insect bones, legs, and wings scattered on a dark surface.

Sorting and Assessment of Flots

Flots can be sorted for plant macrofossils including carbonised grain and seeds, plus molluscs, wood charcoal, insect remains and small mammal bones.

An initial assessment report on flot materials can be carried out at this stage.  This is a quick and efficient way of initially assessing the samples and then targeting the samples which are most likely to yield useful information under full analysis.
